Sandblasting, or dry abrasive blasting, uses compressed air to propel abrasive material against a surface to remove contaminants and improve overall surface finish. This process leaves surfaces clean, smooth, and ready for additional processing.
At N.J. McCutchen, we offer specialized sandblasting services as part of our comprehensive custom steel fabrication solutions. With in-house capabilities that also include machining, ASME code work, welding, painting, and fabrication, N.J. McCutchen provides one-stop solutions for a range of industrial projects. Our Stockton, CA facility is equipped to handle projects of all sizes, from simple cleaning to heavy-duty surface preparation.
Sandblasting Services, Equipment, and Applications
N.J. McCutchen offers high-quality industrial sandblasting services using advanced equipment to meet the needs of diverse projects.
Services
Our sandblasting services leave less residue on project surfaces compared to wet blasting methods. While wet blasting is better for body panels due to its ability to prevent warping, sandblasting is better for intricate components with hard-to-reach areas. Following the sandblasting process, N.J. McCutchen can provide additional services such as priming and painting to further prepare surfaces.
Equipment
Our industrial sandblasting services involve the use of the following equipment:
- Compressor. The compressor, which operates at approximately 90-100 PSI, is responsible for supplying the pressurized air that propels the abrasive media onto the material’s surface.
- Sandblaster. The sandblaster unit itself delivers the abrasive media in a targeted blast. Industrial sandblasters typically have a volumetric flow rate of 50-100 CFM, allowing them to effectively clean and prepare larger surface areas.
- Blast Cabinet or Blast Room. Blast cabinets or blast rooms are enclosed areas where sandblasting operations take place. N.J. McCutchen has a 28’ by 60’ blasting booth that allows us to blast a wide range of projects, large and small.
In addition to the equipment above, we also utilize a 10-ton overhead crane to move large or heavy workpieces more efficiently.
Applications
Sandblasting is compatible with a wide variety of abrasive materials to support the needs of diverse applications. For example, walnut shells are often used for smaller jobs with delicate surfaces, whereas steel grit or sand is better for cleaning tougher surfaces.
Our industrial sandblasting services are ideal for the following applications:
- Restoring Rusty Equipment. Rust oxidizes metal, leading to equipment damage that could halt your operations. With our sandblasting services, we can remove rust from your equipment and bring it back to its original appearance.
- Surface Preparation for Painting or Powder Coating. Sandblasting is highly effective at cleaning and preparing surfaces for painting or powder coating. This helps to prevent rough spots, promote better adhesion, and ensure smooth paint or coating application.
- Removing Oils and Contaminants. Our sandblasting services can be used to remove stuck-on oil and grime that can’t be removed with manual cleaning processes.
